History
We’ve celebrated many milestones throughout our history. By keeping our policyholders’ best interest in mind, Auto-Owners Insurance will continue to put lives back together and grow its list of accomplishments.

July 1916
Vern V. Moulton and four other associates organize Auto-Owners Insurance Company in one room of the Commercial Block Building in the central Michigan city of Mount Pleasant. -
1917
The Company moves its headquarters to Lansing, Michigan, where the home office has remained. At that time, Auto-Owners consisted of one book of policyholder names and $174.25 in assets. -
January 1929
Vern V. Moulton is named president, the equivalent of CEO. He would hold the title until late 1957. -
December 1935
Auto-Owners begins writing insurance in Indiana, its first state outside of Michigan. -
June 1951
The Company unveils its new home office in downtown Lansing. The $1.5 million four-story facility provides much-needed space for the 400 associates who had been working in various buildings scattered throughout Lansing. -
1966
Auto-Owners Life Insurance Company is established. -
December 1976
On the last day of the year, Auto-Owners moves its operations into its current home office from downtown Lansing. -
July 2016
Auto-Owners celebrates its 100th anniversary in business. -
April 2017
Auto-Owners begins its affiliation with the Concord General Mutual Insurance group of companies and welcomes them to the Auto-Owners family. -
Today
Auto-Owners writes insurance in 26 states and employs more than 4,700 associates.
