We’ve celebrated many milestones throughout our history. By keeping our policyholders’ best interest in mind, Auto-Owners Insurance will continue to put lives back together and grow its list of accomplishments.

July 1916Vern V. Moulton and four other associates organize Auto-Owners Insurance Company in one room of the Commercial Block Building in the central Michigan city of Mount Pleasant.

1917The Company moves its headquarters to Lansing, Michigan, where the home office has remained. At that time, Auto-Owners consisted of one book of policyholder names and $174.25 in assets.

January 1929Vern V. Moulton is named president, the equivalent of CEO. He would hold the title until late 1957.

December 1935Auto-Owners begins writing insurance in Indiana, its first state outside of Michigan.

June 1951The Company unveils its new home office in downtown Lansing. The $1.5 million four-story facility provides much-needed space for the 400 associates who had been working in various buildings scattered throughout Lansing.

1966Auto-Owners Life Insurance Company is established.

December 1976On the last day of the year, Auto-Owners moves its operations into its current home office from downtown Lansing.

July 2016Auto-Owners celebrates its 100th anniversary in business.

April 2017Auto-Owners begins its affiliation with the Concord General Mutual Insurance group of companies and welcomes them to the Auto-Owners family.

TodayAuto-Owners writes insurance in 26 states and employs more than 4,700 associates.
